The picturesque coastal town of Laguna Beach, California, is not just a small coastal enclave along the PCH filled with beautiful beaches and coves; it’s also an art lover’s paradise. I was so excited to spend the day exploring all that’s offered, and it’s a lot.

It was impossible to hit every art fair, gallery, and museum, but we definitely gave it the ol’ college try. From high-end art galleries to the Pageant of the Masters, this Orange County town is brimming with the fabulous and whimsical.

I recommend starting the day well before noon so you can really enjoy the cooler temperatures; however, because it is Southern California, the temperatures don’t rise much above 85 degrees, and there’s never any humidity. But don’t let the sun fool you–it can get toasty the more you walk around, and you will do a lot of walking.

Where to Start

Prior to departing Austin, Texas, I reviewed the Visit Laguna Beach website to see what art exhibits I wanted to check out and plan a tentative itinerary. I prefer not to lock myself into a strict schedule when on vacation, but I think it’s important to at least have some game plan, especially when there’s so much to do.

Knowing the operating hours of each location is essential, too, and this site was an excellent resource. We visited on a Monday, so the hours were very different from the weekend, which affected what exhibits and fairs were open.

Laguna Art-A-Fair

After parking a short distance from the row of art exhibits, we casually strolled to our first stop of the day, Laguna Art-A-Fair. This charming half-open-air art exhibit is tucked inside a white contemporary Spanish building that is commonplace throughout Laguna.

Featuring 125 renowned artists and master craftspeople from all over the world, across the United States, and Laguna residents, Art-A-Fair offers a peaceful stroll throughout the garden setting while you view the artwork, sculptures, and jewelry. Several of the artisans were on the grounds creating their masterpieces and were keen to talk to us when we stopped by their booth.

They also offer a variety of workshops, from watercolor classes to jewelry-making, for students 12 and up (as long as an adult accompanies them).

Sawdust Art Festival

The Sawdust Festival is located almost right next door to the Art-A-Fair, and it was by far my favorite mass exhibit of the day. June is the month that Sawdust opens its substantial wooden doors so festival goers can explore the works of Laguna artisans who live and work in town. There are countless booths selling wares, from beautifully glazed pottery and whimsical ceramic mushrooms (I bought two) to pop art and felt stuffed animals. There is something for everyone!

For nine weeks during the summer, this festival attracts over 200,000 visitors from around the world. Guests are invited to shop along sawdust-covered paths in a handcrafted village filled with fine arts and superb craftsmanship. Immerse yourself in unique artwork, enjoy live entertainment on three stages, watch captivating artist demonstrations, participate in hands-on art workshops for all ages, and enjoy delicious food and drinks.
